Oasis Café has a reputation for being a vegetarian-friendly brunch spot in Salt Lake City’s dining scene.  That’s not a bad thing to be known for, except that Oasis offers lunch and dinner, too, not to mention a lot more than veggie-centric dishes.

Oasis Café is tucked away off of 500 East, adjacent to the Golden Braid bookstore.  The cute space has a great patio and a relaxing, coffee shop vibe to it.  Bright paintings hang on the walls in the spaces between the large windows that allow the sun to shine in, creating a happy, sunny atmosphere.

A few weeks ago a group of food bloggers were invited to Oasis to try their three-course dinner special.  The dinner includes an appetizer (usually a salad or soup), an entree and dessert for $25.  Entree options change weekly and Chefs Jared Young and Efren Benitez have yet to repeat their courses.  Like all items served at Oasis, the chefs use organic ingredients from sustainable, local sources.

I started with the Mixed Green Salad, a butter lettuce and mixed green blend with rich gorgonzola cheese, walnuts and grapes tossed with a delicious pear vinaigrette.  For my main dish, I picked the poached Halibut over Sweet Potatoes, served with zucchini, bell peppers and spinach, topped with a dill Hollandaise sauce.  The dish was light and refreshing, but not as flavorful as I’d hoped.

The pan-roasted Beef Medallion over Yukon Gold Potatoes with steamed broccoli and rosemary sauce had much more flavor.  The broccoli and potatoes were classic sides but the beef had a nice, enjoyable richness to it.  Other diners at our table reported that the root vegetable risotto was spectacular.

For dessert we had Apple Pie with ice cream and caramel sauce.  Overall it was quite bland, which was surprising considering that another blogger reported that her lavender-infused panna cotta with fresh berries and pistachio crumble was one of the best panna cotta desserts she’d ever had.  I can’t wait to try that next time!

Go to Oasis Café for :: a healthy, inexpensive dinner in a relaxing setting.  Notes ::  Oasis serves wine by the glass and bottle, craft beers and has a full bar.  They host private parties ranging from 50-100 people.  Reservations are available online here.
